The Patriots played their first home matches of the season Friday and made quick work of both. Andrew College fell 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 in the opener, and Bluefield followed in the afternoon, 25-11, 25-8, 25-9. Cumberlands is 5-1.
Andrew College was also playing its first match as an NAIA member. It showed. This one was never competitive, and it’s worth saying plainly rather than dwelling on it: some tests aren’t about the opponent, and this was one of those days where the Patriots did exactly what a home-opening sweep is supposed to do.
The hitting numbers were absurd
Cumberlands hit .425 against Andrew and .500 against Bluefield. For context, .300 is a strong team performance in college volleyball. Two matches in one day at .400-plus is the kind of number that shows up when a team is completely clicking, not just winning.
The first set against Andrew was the standout: 16 kills and zero attack errors. A team can go an entire match without an error-free set like that. Cumberlands had one before noon.
Two different players carried the two matches
Sara Zampedri was the best hitter on the floor against Andrew College. 10 kills on 15 swings, .600 hitting, a team-high 11 points. She followed it with an even better line against Bluefield: 13 kills on 17 attempts for .706, again the team lead in kills.
Brynnley Bryant’s day looked different on paper but was just as valuable. Against Andrew she hit .467. Against Bluefield she added six service aces and a team-high 14 points, more from serving and finishing than from pure hitting volume. Two matches, two different ways of winning, both real.
Zampedri passed 1,000 for her career
Somewhere across Friday’s two matches, Sara Zampedri recorded the 1,000th dig of her career. The program made it official with its own milestone graphic afterward.
It’s a fitting stat to reach on a day she also led the team in hitting twice over. A thousand digs is a number built almost entirely off-camera, one read-and-react at a time, match after match, for four years. It says as much about her as the kills totals do, maybe more.
Savanah Jolly ran both offenses
54 combined assists across two matches, and Cumberlands hit a combined .466 as a team on the day. That is not a coincidence. She has now run the offense in every match this season, and the results keep landing in the same range regardless of opponent.
The defense had a quiet, complete day
Martina Frangella picked up 6 total blocks against Andrew. Alana Shiery added 4 more against Bluefield. Neither team scored against Cumberlands’ block with any consistency across either match, and it’s the kind of contribution that doesn’t show up in a headline but shows up in a .425 and .500 hitting split for the opponents going the other direction — both Andrew and Bluefield hit negative as a team in multiple sets.
Our take
A home opener with two sweeps, a combined .466 hitting clip, and a 1,000-dig milestone for a senior is about as clean a start as a season can have. The offense has two go-to hitters who are both delivering, a setter distributing at a high level in every match, and a block that is doing real work. 5-1 with the numbers behind it looks sustainable, not lucky.
