Cumberlands opened the season with a shutout, beating Union Commonwealth 3-0 at the UC Soccer Complex. The Patriots scored in three different ways, from three different players, and never let the visitors get a shot off.
Union Commonwealth finished with zero shots. Not zero on goal. Zero, period.
Three goals, three scorers
Tori Robertson opened the scoring less than two minutes in, at 1:57, her first goal of the season. Lisa Skjoldager doubled it at 19:30, and Carmen Villa capped the scoring at 34:17 off a Laura Bosca assist. All three came in the first period; Cumberlands didn’t need a second-half goal because the first 45 minutes were already decisive.
Spreading the goals across three players in the opener is a good early sign. A team that can score from more than one source is harder to game-plan against than one riding a single finisher.
The shot count tells the real story
Cumberlands outshot Union Commonwealth 21-0 for the match, 12-9 by period. Twenty-one shots to zero isn’t a close game that went the Patriots’ way. It’s a team that had the ball for the majority of the afternoon and never let the opponent generate a look.
Evelyn Saldivar led the attack with 4 shots, and Letizia Traversone added 4 more before coming off in the 26th minute. Off the bench, Laura Bosca and Carmen Villa each put up multiple shots and combined for the match’s final goal.
A shutout that didn’t require a save
Goalkeeper Morgan White played all 90 minutes and finished with the clean sheet, and the box score lists zero saves. That’s not a mistake. Union Commonwealth’s keeper, Chiara Isanto, was the busy one, making 8 saves in a losing effort.
A shutout earned without your goalkeeper needing to make a stop says as much about the back line and midfield as it does about the finishing up front.
Our take
A 3-0 win with 21 shots and three different scorers is about as complete a season opener as a team can post. The frontline is producing from multiple spots, and whatever is happening defensively is working well enough that the goalkeeper didn’t have to be the story.
